Roundtable Sept. 13, 2012

Just a note.  We had a new couple at roundtable.  They thought that whatever we do at Roundtable they should be doing in their meetings.  No, not really.  Your program should work for you.  We give ideas and you get to choose if you use them or not.  You don't even have to use the themes the month that has been suggested by BSA.  If you have something you really want to do during a month and a different CORE value would fit that activity, you are more than welcome to change.  Just make sure that you fit all the CORE values in.  We do want to make sure our boys earn their badges during the year.

That being said, we changed from what was suggested in our roundtable guide.  We knew the district was planning a meal and we did not know how much time we would have so we decided to launch some rockets.  We made finger rockets, paper rockets, Diet Coke & Mentos rockets, and shot off a few pop bottle rockets.  I also wanted you to have the directions I used to make the paper rockets that are launched using a straw.  So here is what I used.  The boys will have fun with these.

I love the carving of the rockets.  They are so easy to make and the boys can actually do quite a bit of the work themselves.  However, I think the space derby is the hardest derby to run.  We were using fish line strung between two volley ball standards.  We could only run a couple of rockets at a time.  Then my husband and I bought a space derby track.  It runs four rockets at a time but... it is still slow because of the winding and hooking the rockets onto the track.  If you wind the rocket in the wrong direction you have trouble.  Too many winds and the elastic breaks.  Too few winds and the rocket won't go.  We just wanted to show some alternitives to the space derby.  Also, when we had our space derby I made a few extra rockets so the little kids could get a chace to fly a rocket.

POW WOW Book Supplement

VaLayne Ostler posted the following to Facebook:
I just added the Pow Wow book supplement online on our blog so you don't have to find your disk to access it. Please SHARE this great resource with others on Facebook!
So I would like to share it in any way possible.  It is a very good supplement.  I like the way it has pulled out the advancements for each den and hooked them to a core value.   You can either look at the core value for the month and see what all dens can do that month. (Great for small units that have to run more than one den together.)  Or you can just look at your den to see the progression over the year. I also like the record keeping forms.  It will be well worth your time to check it out.
